Genasun 16.7V 5A GV-5 Lithium MPPT Solar Charge Controller
Compact 5A MPPT charging for 14.8V 4S Li-ion battery systems using a 16.7V CC/CV profile.
DESCRIPTION
Genasun GV-5 16.7V Lithium MPPT Solar Charge Controller
The Genasun GV-5 16.7V Lithium MPPT Solar Charge Controller is a compact, high efficiency solar regulator designed for small 14.8V 4S Li-ion, LiPo and LiCoO2 battery systems. With a 5A rated charging current, 16.7V CC/CV charge profile and a low voltage disconnect load output, it is well suited to portable power projects, compact off-grid systems, telemetry, lighting, field equipment and other installations where efficient harvest from a modest solar panel matters.
Efficient charging from compact solar arrays
Unlike a simple PWM regulator, the GV-5 uses maximum power point tracking to help extract more usable energy from a connected solar panel. Genasun specifies 99+% typical tracking efficiency and up to 99.85% peak electrical efficiency, supporting dependable charging from smaller panels and in variable light. The 15Hz MPPT tracking speed is particularly useful where light conditions change quickly, such as mobile equipment, marine installations, partial shade or passing cloud.
This 16.7V version is the lithium model intended for 14.8V 4S Li-ion battery packs. The manufacturer specifies a CC/CV charge profile with battery temperature compensation disabled, making it important to match the controller to the battery pack charging requirements and BMS limits.
Key features at a glance
- 16.7V lithium charge profile: Designed for 14.8V 4S Li-ion, LiPo and LiCoO2 battery systems requiring a 16.7V CV set point.
- 5A rated charge current: Suitable for small solar systems using up to 75W recommended panel power for this model.
- MPPT solar regulation: Tracks the panel operating point at 15Hz to support efficient charging in changing light.
- Low voltage disconnect output: Provides a 5A continuous rated load output with 12.4V disconnect and 14.0V reconnect points.
- Very low standby draw: Standby consumption is specified at 0.125mA, helping reduce parasitic drain in small systems.
- Compact enclosed design: IP40 enclosure with conformal coating and nickel-plated brass and stainless hardware.
Designed for reliable small-system integration
The GV-5 is built for applications where space, low self-consumption and stable charging performance are priorities. Its small enclosure, 6-position terminal block and wide 12 to 30 AWG conductor range make it practical for tidy installation in compact battery boxes, instrument enclosures and portable solar builds. The multicolour LED provides operating and fault indication for standby, charging, current limit and common fault conditions.
Genasun Overdrive is included on current GV-5 models. This adaptive power-limiting feature allows the controller to manage oversized arrays while keeping the electronics within a safe operating temperature. The solar input voltage limit still applies, and the manufacturer notes that exceeding the input voltage limit will damage the controller and void warranty.
Installation considerations
The GV-5 must be installed with suitable external overcurrent protection, as the controller does not include a fuse. The latest manual specifies that the positive or negative battery cable should be protected by a fast-acting fuse or circuit breaker of 10A or less close to the battery terminal or power distribution block. For outdoor installations, the controller must be housed in an enclosure providing protection at least equivalent to NEMA Type 3, and the unit should not be exposed to water.
For lithium systems, Genasun recommends a battery with a BMS capable of disconnecting the solar charge controller if any cell is outside its rated temperature, current or voltage range. This GV-5 model is a focused, efficient solution for correctly matched 4S Li-ion solar charging systems where compact size and low standby draw are important.
