DESCRIPTION

Genasun 36V 8A GV-Boost Lead-Acid MPPT Solar Charge Controller

The Genasun GV-Boost GVB-8-Pb-36V is a specialist voltage-boosting MPPT solar charge controller designed for 36V lead-acid, AGM, gel, sealed and flooded battery systems. Unlike conventional solar controllers that step panel voltage down to charge a lower-voltage battery bank, the GVB-8 Boost is built to lift a lower-voltage solar panel output up to charge a higher-voltage battery bank.

This makes it a practical choice where a compact solar array needs to support a 36V battery system without relying on multiple small panels wired in series. It is well suited to properly designed RV, marine, portable, micro-mobility and off-grid applications where the solar panel remains within the controller’s input ratings and the installation environment is appropriate for an IP40 device.

Genasun’s high-speed MPPT technology continuously tracks the panel’s operating point, with the official datasheet listing 99 percent peak efficiency, 99+ percent typical tracking efficiency and 15 Hz MPPT tracking speed. In real-world conditions where panel voltage, heat and shade can change quickly, that fast tracking helps the controller stay aligned with available solar input rather than relying on slow sweep cycles.

  • Voltage-boosting MPPT design: Allows a lower-voltage solar panel to charge a 36V lead-acid battery bank when installed within the published input limits.
  • 36V lead-acid charge profile: Multi-stage charging with temperature compensation for lead-acid, AGM, gel, sealed and flooded battery types.
  • 325W recommended panel rating: Supports up to 325W maximum recommended panel power for the 36V lead-acid model.
  • Compact IP40 enclosure: Small 137 x 62 x 33 mm body with nickel-plated brass and stainless hardware.
  • Fast MPPT response: 15 Hz tracking speed and strong low-light performance for applications with changing solar conditions.

For the GVB-8-Pb-36V model, the datasheet lists a maximum recommended panel Vmp of 41V, maximum input panel voltage of 60V and recommended maximum panel Voc at STC of 50V. These figures are important when selecting a panel, particularly where cold weather can raise open-circuit voltage. The controller is rated for 8A panel input current, with Sunforge noting that panel ratings have increased since the GVB-8 was designed and that they are comfortable recommending panels with Imp up to 9A, provided maximum input power and voltage requirements are also respected.

The unit uses a 4-position terminal block for 10 to 30 AWG copper conductors and includes a built-in 10A fast-acting ATO fuse. It also provides LED status indication for standby, charging, current limit, charged battery and fault conditions, helping installation checks and troubleshooting after commissioning.

The GVB-8-Pb-36V is the standard IP40 model. It should not be exposed to water, and Genasun’s manual directs users to the GVB-8-WP model where waterproofing is required. For lead-acid versions, the manual also specifies use within 0.3 m of the batteries due to internal temperature compensation.

For systems needing a small, efficient and purpose-built way to charge a 36V lead-acid battery bank from a lower-voltage solar panel, the Genasun GVB-8-Pb-36V offers a clean, compact solution backed by detailed official specifications.
